What is a Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic?

A Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic is a clinic that offers primary health care services in which nurse practitioners are the main providers of your health care. The nurse praditioner works as part of a team with other health professionals to provide the best possible health care. In 2007 the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care announced that it would be creating 25 Nurse Practhioner-Led Clinics in Ontario by 2012. There are now over 25 Nurse Practitioner-Led clinics up and running.

What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse who has undergone advanced university education to provide quality health care to clients. Their goal is to promote health and treat your illness. Nurse practitioners can make diagnoses, treat illness, prescribe medications, make referals to other health professionals and order and interpret labratory and diagnostic tests. A visit to a nurse practitioner can include a well-baby checkup, administration of immunizations, physical assessment, routine prenatal care, monitoring and treatment of chronic dieseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and asthma and ordering og tests such as pap tests, blood work, x-rays, ultrasounds, and mammograms.

Who is part of the team at the Norther Neighbours Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic?

The Northern Neighbours Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic's team will include nurse practiloners, a registered nurse, social worker, collaborating physician, clinic administrator, and a receptionist will be provided at both the White River and Pic Mobert First Nation sites.

How can I prepare for my first appointment with the Nurse Practitioner?

Your first appointment will be between 30 and 60 minutes long. You will need to bring all of your medcations, immunization records, and any other health documents that you have to the first appointment. Your first appointment will indude a detailed assessment of your health history. You are welcome to bring a family member to this appointment. Your nurse practitioner wiil be happy to answer any questions you may have about his or her role and about the Nurse Practiloner-Led Clinic.
